In he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Huddersfield in recognition of his achievements in electroacoustic music, and in he became an Honorary Professor at the University of Kent. He has taken a keen interest in the performance of electroacoustic music, and pioneered the concept of sound diffusion in the UK, developing the first sound diffusion system from at the University of East Anglia Norwich, UK.

For ten years from he was very active in promoting electroacoustic music in a number of concert tours for the Arts Council Contemporary Music Network, working with such composers and performers as Sarah Walker voice , John Tilbury piano , Singcircle with Trevor Wishart , John Wallace trumpet; with Tim Souster.

Denis Smalley is also notable as a writer on the aesthetics of electroacoustic music. A follow-up article — Space-Form and the Acousmatic Image — elaborates spatial concepts relating to spectromorphology. With Lelio Camilleri he conceived and edited the first publication in English devoted to the analysis of electroacoustic music Journal of New Music Research,

Denis Smalley - Spectromorphology

Shadal Benjamin Talbott Smalley uses four terms to describe this relationship: Organised Sound, 2 2pp. Within these groups exists more terminology for describing that particular motion or growth process. Smalley also adds two types of noise; granular and saturate, to describe the perceptual qualities attributed to certain types of noise. Spectromorphology — Wikipedia Motion explains a similar concept to morphology, but extends to the overall movement of complex sound through time. Views Read Edit View history. To formalise further, Smalley insists rightly that the spectra the harmonic information cannot exist without morphology, since something which occupies space must also extend in time — hence spectro-morphology. On the fifth distinct note heard, the piece begins to change.

To formalise further, Smalley insists rightly that the spectra the harmonic information cannot exist without morphology, since something which occupies space must also extend in time — hence spectro-morphology. Spectral density is used to describe how sounds emanate from one another. By continuing to use this website, you agree to their use.
